Galleys

Possibly one of the smallest ships I have painted for some time (around 1cm long) , these galleys have been in my collection for 10 years or more as a sample purchase for looking at scales for galley warfare during the Greek wars. I have painted them for “The Wargamers Forum” summer build which finishes next week. I hope to also complete some other naval pieces for the build also.

Not sure what rules to use, but will complete my larger ships first before I dive into researching rulesets as I would prefer small fleet actions rather than huge battles.

NSW Naval Landing Party Boxer rebellion

 Colonial NSW Naval Sailor

As part of my desk clear out of my project drawers I decided over the Christmas break to paint some 54mm figures that are not quite up to modern casting and sculpting. These old school figures allow me to practice on large figures particularly my skin colouring and blending  etc.

I am quite happy with my result although I could of spent more time on the tunic but he will fit in fine on my top shelf of my Louis 17th display porcelain cabinet in the Wargames salon.

I do know that he was sculpted by Mike Broadbent (Eureka sculpter ) in his early days, I am guessing 25 odd years ago and Mike gave him to me one day when I was visiting his house. He has sat in my large figure drawer collection for at least that long.

Rembrandt and the Dutch golden age

Last weekend we decided to visit the NSW Art Gallery to celebrate Vanessa and my wedding anniversary. A number of the paintings depicted Naval actions from the Four Days Naval Battle (11-14 June 1666) during the Anglo-Dutch war of 1666-1672. The Dutch artist Willem van de Velde the elder painted a lot of naval scenes, with great detail for wargamers.

Australian Napoleonic Congress 2013

Some pictures from the Napoleonic Congress on the weekend, we had four games for the weekend, a big thanks to Clinton for running us through his computer / tablet based rules "Iron Duke", Mark for bringing down his 1812 games, Colin for his fine collection of British and French for our 1813 Spanish game, and to Boyd and the lads for a great Naval game that kept us all very entertained for several hours.

ACW ironclads

Well such a beutiful day on Sunday I decided to take some photos after I finished preparing the garden beds for spring planting. I managed to get my ACW 1/1200th Langton ACW ships out and take a few photos so I thought I would share them. A bought a few of these for a river fight game for the ACW weekend, but they never managed to make it onto the table. I enjoyed painting these and after undercoating I think I painted all four in about two hours, a basic colour then a wash in devlan mud, and I am very pleased how they came out, I am thinking about returning and adding stays to the funnels with brush bristles and perhaps flags.
