Komnenian Byzantine Army

Komnenian Byzantine Army

Hot of the painting desk today, the last remaining figures of a Komnenian Byzantine army commision of over three hundred figures. Painted for a long term Australian client Colin. Colin visited us in France this year at L'hotel de Herce for our personalised guided battlefield tours of the Loire, Brittany and Normandy. We had the opportunity to "walk the battlefields then wargame in the afternoon " it on the tabletop at French Wargame Holidays.

Miniatures are from Eureka miniatures and based for impetus.
You can book our military history tours and wargame holidays with us direct here

French Gendarmes d'ordonnance

Finally out of the oven on the weekend some of Eureka's fine Gendarmes, these figures are superb and have a large number of variations due to the plug in weapon arm and plumes a real plus for the peons who like variation in their armies. I tried to tie the unit together primarily using red as the main colour so they look like a unit. Hopefully Joe will use them well in his French Army!

Irish Pike and Shot

Some more of the ECW army I bought back at the carboot sale. This unit are all Eureka miniatures. They represent a Irish Pike and shot unit that arrived to help Montrose's campaign in Scotland. A quick paint touch up and re-basing was all that was required

Gordon Horse

The next unit returning to the fold is George Gordon, 2nd Marquess of Huntly's Horse.
They defected to the Royalist cause (George Gordon was Catholic). I still need to complete the flag for this unit as no marketed flags are available I need to hand paint the bugger!

The miniatures are from Eureka Miniatures, sculpted by Alan Marsh

ACW Limber out of Ammo

These are actually repaints as they tend to get knocked about during our ACW games, in Jonny Reb double or tripple sixs result in a out of ammo marker being placed next to the . Boyd and I prefer these than simple cardboard cut pieces, they are available from Eureka miniatures, made for 15mm and 28mm Fire and Fury.

The two limbers are From redoubt I think

Jäger Flieger Korps

As I was getting a little stressed by work earlier this week I decided to finish some Pulp figures off, so I felt that I was getting somewhere with painting at the moment. I picked these up in a job lot of second hand figures, I have been informed by Nic (thanks mate nice to see you are reading my blog!) that the figures are some of his WW1 science fiction Eureka miniatures, sculpted by Mike Broadbent!

My Jäger Flieger Korps will be used in one of our upcoming Pulp games, and will be a great asset to the Kaiser's plans, I think I need a further four for a full Zug!!!!!

Sugar and Spice and all things nice Ticonderoga Moab

Well Australia's largest Sydney wargames convention MOAB (Mother Of All Battles Convention) has come and gone and its time to take stock of the purchases and sales.

I thought it was busier than most years on Saturday and Sunday, however Monday was quiter, talking to the trader the buyers seemed to have stayed away or kept thier money in thier pockets. I still however manged to pick up a few bargains, on the bring and buy I picked up the score of the show IMO 120 Perry and Foundry AWI figures for $65 I am still amazed by this now! I also picked up some 28mm Gripping Beast cathaginians and some A and A Late Roman infantry. On the Retail front I bought a bunch of Crusader Macedonians figs to flesh out some units I already have and add to some armies for variation, and a ECW building to add to my collection.

Between Scott, Nathan, Louis and myself we run a Ticonderoga participantion game, figs from Scots and my collection. We played the game each day to completion using British Grenadier rules. Enjoy the pics from Nathan. A mix of Front Rank, First Corps, Eureka and Conquest figures, terrain and table and barricades by me.

Victory without Qauter

The guys at the Goulburn Valiant Stormer’s are throwing around some ideas for the big project next year, a few of us think be 30 years war could be a possible front runner, as the warlord plastics lend themselves nicely to the period (still some discussion and dissention in the ranks as to basing conventions though), so with that thought a number of us have started to play test some rule sets. On Sunday Dave and I (we both normally play Warhammer English Civil War) had a game using the Free “Victory without Quarter” rules.

Using my ECW figs we each had a C in C, one cavalry general , two pike and shot blocks, one trotter and one galloper horse unit, one gun and a clubman for the parliament and highlanders for the Irish Royalists.

The game was played over 4 hours, I really liked the rules as I found they could be a little unpredictable and I liked the different factors for troop types and the card idea, although I think that VWQ will be a little slow for those players wanting to get two games in on a club day. VWQ still gave a satisfactory result and possibly would speed up after a few games; however I don’t think they would handle much more troop wise, two more pike blocks possibly and another regiment of horse each would slow it down even more. My ECW army is a mix of different figures, the Irish Montrose army are mostly Eureka, the pike and shot, horse, a mix of Old Glory, Perry and Eureka Highlanders and a Foundry gun and crew, On the parliment side, all Foundry and Perry except for the clubmen who are Warlord metals.

As the boys want to play a more grand tactical game I think VWQ will not be suitable for what we have in mind, although I would happily use VWQ for ECW. The next rule set we will play test is the Baroque set from the guys who wrote impetus.
